What Is A Total Loss?
Finding out your vehicle has been written off can be frustrating and confusing
You may be wondering:
- What happens next?
- How much will the insurer pay?
- Can you challenge the valuation?
- Can you keep your vehicle?
- Will you still get a replacement vehicle?
Our experienced UK claims handlers will explain your options clearly and answer your questions without pressure or jargon

A vehicle is considered "written off" or a "total loss" when the cost of repairing it is greater than, or close to, its market value
This doesn't necessarily mean your vehicle cannot be repaired
If your accident wasn't your fault, we'll explain your options and help you understand the process

Understanding Vehicle Categories
Category B
The vehicle itself must never return to the road. Some usable parts may be removed and reused
Category S
The vehicle has suffered structural damage. It can usually be repaired safely and returned to the road once repaired correctly
Category N
The vehicle has no structural damage. It may still require repairs before returning to the road
Important
Being placed into Category S or Category N does not automatically mean a vehicle can never be driven again
Many Category S and Category N vehicles are repaired safely and legally returned to the road
